In the book Dusk to Dawn, Hugo Vanterpool opens a window on an often overlooked corner of the Caribbean; Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Set in the last days of colonialism and at the dawn of political awakening in the West Indies, the author captures the indomitable spirit of the Virgin Islanders as he chronicles the tragedies and triumphs of the Todman family. Young Allan Todman moves from adolescent to young adult, and his maturing characterizes that of a new generation. Vanterpool has said that, "Like James Joyce's Ireland of the early 1900s, the British Virgin Islands today is still searching for its soul. "Dusk to Dawn, then, is the beginning of that quest, as an isolated community comes to grips with its place in a changing world. Hugo Felix Vanterpool was born in the British Virgin Islands in 1944. He was educated at the Leeward Islands Teachers Training College in Antigua and the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. He spent his early professional years teaching at the islands; primary and secondary government schools. At the age of thirty-six he became manager of the Development Bank of the Virgin Islands, a post he held for fifteen years. He has spent the last two years consolidating a family business. He is married to the former Erlin George, and they have three sons and two daughters.
